Why Buying from Small Chemical-Free Farms is Money Well-Spent for Our Health and Our Planet's?
Most diseases and disorders today, including cancer, heart attacks, weight gain, high blood pressure and blood sugar, and hormonal (such as thyroid) disorders, are believed to be rooted in our metabolic imbalances caused by exposure to stressful ecosystems and ingestion of DENATURED food. It may not be easy to walk away from all stressors in life, but it is possible to help our body balance its metabolism through the miraculous power of NATURAL food, particularly vegetables. But most vegetables in stores today are DENATURED, which means preserved (with chemicals or packaging) for long-distance distribution, long shelf lives in the supermarket and perfect looks. The focus is on large yield (quantity of production), profits and perfect looks and not on the taste, raw freshness, nutrient density or the health of the soil. For example, as you will see in our pages about garlic, many of the cheap (non-organic) garlic brands sold in stores today are bleached or fumigated with chemicals to look perfect. Or as you see in our cabbage pages, chemical-free organic methods result in much higher nutrient density (vitamin C for example in cabbages) when compared with sprayed methods. Yet, many people on a tight budget cannot afford better quality produce. Others with higher income do not even know where to go to find local farms that offer real fresh, chemical-free, tasty fruits and vegetables. Our goal from starting this website is to offer residents of Southeast Pennsylvania chemical-free LOCAL FRESH TASTY (Sometimes Not Perfect Looking!) vegetables (produced through regenerative organic methods) at affordable prices.
The majority of commercial farmers and crop producers are continually looking to increase their crop yield which, in simpler terms, means the amount of product they grow. Through the use of genetically modified organisms, petrochemical fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides, and other synthetic continual inputs, farmers have tripled their crop yield since the mid-1950s. High planting density, a term referring to the number of crops planted in a certain area, plays a large role in the weakness of plants’ root growth and their inability to fully absorb nutrients from the soil. Current commercial agriculture methods are resoundingly driven by profit and are focused on yielding a higher quantity of food instead of working to maintain a high quality of food. The average vegetable found in today’s supermarkets are 5%-40% lower in mineral content than those from over 50 years ago. So, let’s say you eat 10 carrots as a snack. Although your carrots might be bigger, you may have to eat more than those 10 carrots to obtain the nutritional value of 10 carrots from around 1960. After all, farmers and large food distributors and supermarkets are paid by the weight of their crops, not by nutritional value!
But what about the soil itself? The quality of soil has been declining rapidly too. Fertile, biodiverse soil is the main provider of beneficial nutrients to the crops that we consume and without this, the quality of the produce we put into our bodies is suffering. Many people do not realize that our health is intricately linked to the planet's. When we damage the planet's surface by compacting and sterilizing its soil (killing life forms through pesticides and other chemicals), we not only play a role in causing frequent and extreme flood/drought, temperature and carbon cycles, but also in causing diseases and disorders in our own bodies because proper metabolism of food depends on the health and biodiversity in the soil upon which our food grows on.
NOTE: We do not spray or fumigate our vegetables with harmful synthetic chemicals. We also do not wash farm-fresh dirt-protected produce. Please dust off any dirt or dried-up transit bugs like leaf miners before consumption, peeling or rinsing.
